6 Must-See & Do in Zakynthos!

Have you made your holiday plans yet? Where do you go when seeking for fun-packed sunny days, glorious bays, natural treasures and poolside cocktails? What’s the point of going on holiday if you don’t enjoy every aspect of it? While surfing the internet on places to hop to, only one destination pops that offers all the features a summer holiday carries-it’s Greek, it’s an island, it’s rich in cultural heritage, it’s stunningly beautiful and has the most amazing bays you have ever set your eyes on-it’s Zakynthos of course!

Blue Caves are a hit, and one of the many hidden natural treasures you’ll come across on the island. Some even describe the Blue Caves as intoxicating! The arches of the caves were formed by sea erosion, but what makes them, so exhilarating is their turquoise water. Guess what? Whatever goes into the water turns blue, not literally of course!

You have all seen a postcard or picture of Zakynthos’ fabulous Shipwreck Bay, right? Well, what if I told you it’s even more breathtaking from up close! A large fleet sunk back in 1980 after being chased by the authorities for smuggling illegal cigarettes. The ship is a Scottish fleet made in 1937!  Now, why is the Shipwreck Bay the most photographed beach in Greece? Well, the sunken ship just adds to the entire effect of the scene, as it is plunged into emerald blue waters, chalk-like sands and encircled by 900 feet soaring cliffs! Words cannot describe the views of the mystifying bay from above!

Greeks and mezedes go hand-in-hand, there is no way you can separate the two, so all you foodies out there prepare yourselves! Your taste buds will have a party! Greek islanders are the most hospitable people on earth, and they tend to go overboard with their hospitality by stuffing you with food! At least it’s delicious! Wherever you go, the smell of fresh fish food or Zakynthos’ traditional dishes fills the air. What makes the food so incredibly irresistible? Pure olive oil of course! Greeks don’t just eat; the whole process is like a massive festivity! Many traditional taverns have live music performances which last till the wee hours! Before you know it, everyone is singing along to the words of the songs, dancing on tables and smashing plates (a traditional custom symbolizing kefi-fun) Oppa!

The island has a rich cultural history that fascinates even the tedious jetsetters. The island’s history goes all the way back to 1600 BC, and artefacts or findings are exhibited in the many museums found on the island. One of the most fascinating is the Byzantine Museum of the island. Museum of D. Solomos and A. Kalvos is another history lover must-see, as the collection showcases works of two of the most important Greek poets, Dionysios Solomos and Andreas Kavlos. Solomos is the poet who wrote the national anthem of Greece!

Zakynthos is home to the Caretta-Caretta Loggerhead Turtles, which lay their eggs and live on the shoreline of the island. Although many nesting areas are restricted by the island’s authorities, several are not, so holidaymakers get to witness the miracle of life up close and personal! Head for Kalamaki Beach or watch them swimming at Laganas Bay! Real enthusiasts can go snorkelling or diving and get to swim side by side with one of these thrilling characters!

Zakynthos offers an all-inclusive holiday. Its sun-kissed shores, fabulous natural treasures, culture and history as well as hospitality captivate all its visitors instantly. It is as if the island magical casts a spell which spellbinds you forever and we are sure you’ll all have a fabulous time while staying at Louis Zante Beach or Sentido Louis Plagos Beach!
