5 things you must do while staying at Chania

A breathtaking location in Greece, the Chania district, is a place of wonder situated on the north side of Crete. The region is home to a diversity of landscapes that even Peter Jackson would envy. And, of course, Crete’s food culture is as vibrant as its people’s and is definitely of top-notch quality. Read on and discover five things to do in Chania this summer.

Balos Lagoon
One of the most frequently photographed locations in Crete. The Balos Lagoon is truly photogenic. And no wonder! This shallow water lagoon was formed at the very tip of the Gramvousa peninsula, with all the criteria for a desirable spot. The white, sandy shore contrasts with the reddish-brown sand and lush greenery of the Cretan mountains in a way that begs for admiration and capturing the scenery.
But great things and spectacular views don’t come around easily. To reach this wonder of nature you need to drive off the main road and take a hike for about 20 minutes. It might sound difficult to get there but it worths a visit.

Old Town Stroll
Now we’re not talking about a casual stroll in the Old Town of Chania. To truly experience the culture, vibe, and scenery you will need at least half a day to explore the colorful cobble-stoned alleys and admire the Venetian architecture, Egyptian-style lighthouse and Jewish neighborhood. An intercultural tour in a single place!

Visit a Castle by the Sea
If you head toward the south of the island, you will eventually reach one of the best beaches on the entire island. An unusual feature of the south region of Crete, the beach situated by the tranquil village of Frangokastello is that it’s wide and shallow making it the ideal place for romantic walks, as well as a day with your youngster family members.
What makes the place even more wonderful is the ancient Venetian fortress which was built in the late 12th century. Historians are uncertain about the actual date, but they deduce it was erected somewhere between 1371 and 1374 to deter frequent pirate attacks.

Municipal Market
Food, food, and food. As important as it is to Greek culture, the Cretan cuisine is something the locals are extremely proud of and take very seriously. At the Agora (Old Town), also known as the Municipal Market, you can discover the tasty and local products which make up the Cretan diet.
