Apparently, it took the Venetians about a decade to complete its construction (1577-1588). The New Fort is much smaller than the island’s Old Fortress. It is comprised of two levels.  The first level was constructed in order to protect the harbour while the second was built to protect the city from enemy raids. Surrounding the fort is a moat, which was constructed in order to protect the fort. The magnificence of the New Fortress lies in its unique architecture. It is a true jewel overwhelms and inspires all its visitors and passersby.
