Paphos Lighthouse is indeed the city’s iconic landmark, which can be seen from any place you might be in the city. The Lighthouse is the perfect spot to watch the mesmerising Paphos sunset having the whole city as a backdrop.
The Paphos Archaeological Park boasts with prehistoric treasures such as the impressive Paphos Mosaics which decorated the floors of Greco-Roman Palaces. While wandering through the park you will also view the grandiose 2nd-century Roman amphitheatre, the Odeon, which has been completely restored and is used for musical and theatrical performances during the summer months till this day.
The Tombs of the King is an UNESCO Heritage site, depicting an ancient underground graveyard where the tombs were carved into solid rock. The name of the 4th century burial ground connotes that kings were buried, but in fact it is where past aristocrats were buried hundreds of years ago. Aphrodite’s Rock was named after the Greek Goddess of Love and Beauty, Aphrodite. As legend has it, Aphrodite rose from the foam of the sea waves at exactly this spot. Paphos Castle is found standing proudly at the edge of the city’s picturesque harbour. Even if you wanted to, it’s hard to miss the Paphos Castle! The ancient Byzantine castle dates back to Roman times. During the passage of time, the castle was destroyed by earthquake and various conquerors who rebuilt it using it for different reasons. For instance, the fort has been used as a prison as well as for storing salt. Now it is one of the most renowned landmarks on the island, which revives every September during Paphos’ open-air festival.
Anyone who has visited Ayios Neophytos Monastery will confirm that it is a like teleporting yourself to another era. The monastery was founded in 1159 by a monk and writer named Neophytos. Currently, monks still reside within the walls of the monastery who lead a strictly religious life.
