Church of Panagia in Lindos

The Church of Panagia is a captivating sight and a must-visit for all holidaymakers while in Rhodes! The Church of Panagia, which is dedicated to Our Lady, is found enclosed by towering walls and a small-sized courtyard. The archaic church was first built back in 1300. With the passage of the years, the church has been renovated as well as reconstructed several times. The most significant changes were made during the Italian occupation by the Grand Master Pierre d’Aubusson of the Knights of Rhodes during 1467-1503. The most recent renovations were made back in 1927.

The most impressive feature of the church is the towering, stone-built bell tower, which is a typical feature of all Dodecanese churches. The church is a cross-shaped building with an elaborate octagonal dome, a red Byzantine tiled-roof and whitewashed walls.

The interior of the church holds many surprises. Upon entering the church it is hard not to notice the marvellously made pebbled-mosaic floor, which is also a typical Dodecanese architectural feature. At the front of the church, visitors marvel at the elaborately decorated wooden-carved iconostasis as well as the Bishop’s throne. Hanging from the ceiling are massive bronze-made candle chandeliers.14396785831_a080f76b56

The most amazing feature is the 19th century wall frescoes that depict scenes taken from the bible. The vaulted roof as well as dome is decorated by fabulously-made frescoes, revealing icons of the saints, Jesus as well as Mary that date back to 1779.

As you exit the church, positioned above the door, you will come upon a large-sized multicoloured fresco depicting the Last Judgement.

Lindos Church of Panagia is truly an architectural jewel that should not be missed by any visitor!
