Váï Beach, also known locally as Finikodassos, meaning Palm Forest, is a stunning golden bay with a densely palm tree covered forest as a backdrop. The palm trees are said to be Europe’s largest palm tree forest and date back more than 3000 years. Based on local legend, the palm trees grew on the bay after Saracen pirates threw away date stones which washed up on the bay. Elafonisi Beach’s sparkling turquoise waters beautifully contrast with the pink sandy bay making it one of the most breathtaking beaches in the world. Frangokastello Beach is what some may call a historic spot both literally and metaphorically! The beach was named after the Venetian castle on site which used to guard the town against raiding pirates. Besides the dominant fort that decorates the bay area, visitors can also visit other ancient ruins in the surrounding area. Therefore, all beach lovers can make a day out of sightseeing as well as sunbathing.
