Ano Mera – Mykonos

Are you ready to plunge into Mykonos’ traditional world? Head for Ano Mera, the island’s most populated village. The dominating Cycladic architecture transports all visitors to the island’s timeless past.

Ano Mera’s central square is dotted with traditional Mykonian taverns, patisseries serving traditional sweets as well as charming village cafes. The settlement encircles Ano Mera’s central square where visitors find the 16th century Monastery of Panagia Tourliani, the village’s most renowned landmark. According to the inscription found on an icon, the monastery was built by two monks in 1542.

Amongst the most impressive features of the monastery is its marble bell tower which is decorated with inspiring folk carvings. Other impressive features include the monastery’s grandiose water fountain as well as its baroque-like iconostasis and byzantine icons depicting scenes taken from the New Testament which were created by Florentine artists back in 1775. Panagia Tourliani is dedicated to the island’s protectress. The Monastery of Panagia Tourliani is also home to a fascinating museum that exhibits carvings made of wood, embroideries as well as liturgical clothes.

The remains of the Byzantine castle Paleokastro (Old Castle), found on the hilltop across Ano Mera is also worth visiting.

Ano Mera provides the perfect escape from Mykonos crowded capital, Chora. Visitors get a taste of the island’s traditional and more tranquil aspect as they wander through the inviting cobblestoned alleys of the village, overflowing with Cycladic charm and hospitable locals.
